Riches Makes Thieves

It is four hundred and fifty years ago that Pieter Bruegel the Elder (circa 1525-1569) died, leaving behind him an impressive legacy of art work including paintings, drawings and prints. A good opportunity for the Museum to showcase the Fight of the Money Bags and the Coffers, an engraved work based on one of the Flemish artist’s drawings and exhibited in the Museum.

Hip hip hooray! The new museum is one year old!

The new NBB Museum is celebrating its first anniversary. After a week of test runs, it was finally time to open the doors: on 15 January 2018 the museum was officially inaugurated in the fully renovated building of the former “Union du Crédit de Bruxelles” bank at Montagne aux Herbes potagères 57. This anniversary is the perfect opportunity to look back over the past year. A few highlights.

NEW in the teachers’ room

Inflation, deflation, currency, book-entry money or FinTech: the National Bank deals with them every day. But what exactly do these economic concepts and financial terms mean? Short videos and animations in the teachers’ room of the museum explain fifty important words in a clear and entertaining way.

A memorable autumn evening at the museum

This autumn, more than 70 museums will join the Brussels Museums late night openings (“nocturnes”), the NBB Museum again ranking among them. On Thursday 22 November, it will keep its doors open until the exceptional time of 10.00 pm and its nocturne offers a wide range of experiences for young and old alike.

Car-free Sunday in the museum

The museum of the National Bank of Belgium will be exceptionally open on the 16th September for the car-free Sunday in Brussels. Why not pay us a visit to find the link with the National Bank of Belgium on this special day?

Europe Day

Europe Day is celebrated on 9 May each year. On that day we commemorate the declaration made by Robert Schuman in 1950. Robert Schuman was the French Minister for Foreign Affairs who on 9 May 1950 gave a speech leading to the foundation of the European Coal and Steel Community. This event marked the beginning of European unification. The NBBmuseum highlights different facets of the European story and mainly focuses on the role Belgium has played in this tale.

The wondrous story of Madame de Nettine

On 5th May the NBB celebrates its 167th birthday. It might just as well have been its 256th birthday, if Barbe-Louis-Josèphe de Nettine (1706-1755) had not put a stop to that. The NBBmuseum gives an account of the events.

New study on Paul van Zeeland

The monetary and financial history of the inter-war years is one of the most evocative parts of the NBB Museum. “From uncontrolled economic booms to deep depression” is how the period could be summed up. The role played at this time by Paul van Zeeland (1893-1973) as an economist, central banker and politician is quite remarkable. A newly released research paper throws new light on his ideas.
