Heritage day 2019 celebrates craftmanship  Share

Affiche_Erfgoeddag_webFR-NLThe museum of the National Bank of Belgium will be exceptionally open on Sunday 28 April for the 19th edition of Heritage Day. Each year on Heritage Day, museums, archives, documentation centres, libraries and heritage centres all over Flanders and Brussels can be visited free of charge. The 2019 edition is fully dedicated to craftmanship and the magic of making. In Brussels alone you can participate in no less than 32 fascinating and fun activities. In the NBBmuseum it is all about the art and craft of coin making in the past.

The museum offers you a guided tour (in Frennch and Dutch) and a workshop allowing you to learn, discover and explore the remarkable history of minting. The basic minting process of melting and casting metal, cutting blanks from that metal and the striking of those blanks between a pair of engraved dies is essentially timeless. But the manner in which the various stages of this process have been carried out has changed considerably over the centuries. In the early-modern period the minting process was mechanised and the centuries old hammer was replaced by the screw press.

Thanks to the coin dies lent to us by the Provincial Archeocentre Velzeke, visitors will have the opportunity to strike their own ‘Roman’ coin on the spot and take it back home with them!

The museum opens it doors from 10:00 to 17:00. Admission, guided tours and workshops are free, but guided tours and workshops are on reservation only.
