Each event its own coin.
Since 2004, the countries belonging to the Eurosystem have received, from the European Council, the right to mint commemorative 2€-coins, but only once a year and one per country. These coins are legal tender in the whole euro area. They are struck to commemorate historic or current events of a specific importance.
Eurocompetition
The contest Eurocompetition, organised by the European Commission, has been held from September to December 2008. Its aim? To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the euro and the Economic and Monetary Union.

How many Euro countries are there? Twenty-seven? No, although the European Union has 27 member states since 1 January 2007, the Euro area is not that large. Twelve? Almost, that was the correct answer in 2002. Fifteen then? Until a short while ago this was correct, but we are now in 2009 and that’s the year that the Euro area welcomes its sixteenth member: Slovakia. High time to discover the newest series of Euro coins.

In 1654 Christina, the young Swedish queen, caused upheaval when she abdicated and became a convert to the Roman-Catholic faith. Her extravagancy and the recently ended Thirty years’ war (1618-1648) had left her country with enormous debts. To make financial matters worse, her successor and cousin, Charles X Gustavus, continued warfare with Poland and Denmark. These lasting conflicts were a serious threat to the economy and caused a depreciation of the copper plate money or kopparplätmynt.
Cyprus and Malta join the Euro area
1 January 2008, the Euro area enlarged again as Cyprus and Malta joined the other 13 members of the euroclub. Both countries only recently joined the European Union, i.e. 1 May 2004 which means that they were very succesful in adapting their economies.

Consquently, the variety of currencies has always been enormous Today the euro, the currency of an evergrowing number of European countries, is the result of a long process of monetary unification. The vierlander (= four lands), the 15th century silver coin we are focussing on this month, is one of the early forerunners of monetary union.
Slovenia has adopted the euro
Slovenia has officially adopted the euro on January 1st, 2007. Therefore it has become, together with its two million inhabitants, the 13th, European Member State among the 27 to use the euro.
