Did you know that the tapestry actually depicts four personages?

In reality, the features of the figures depicted in our masterpiece are not those of Charles V and Maria of Hungary, but of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba. Yet it is a tapestry portraying Charles V and his sister. Why use the features of biblical characters? In the days of Charles V, it was usual for rulers to be represented as biblical or mythical characters. The aim was to imply that the ruler possessed the good qualities of those personages. By adopting the features of King Solomon, Charles V wanted to present himself as a very wise ruler.
